Clean Break – Reinventing the Floor Scrubber

As a contract designer, Patrick partnered with Windsor Industries to help revolutionize the small floor scrubber market. Serving as lead industrial designer on a cross-functional team of engineers, drafters, manufacturing managers, and marketing professionals, Patrick helped guide the project from research to award-winning execution.

Over the course of a year, the team hit the ground—observing, interviewing, and analyzing how cleaning professionals worked across hospitals, airports, hotels, offices, and restaurants. Using a QFD-based process, they mapped user needs, evaluated satisfaction with existing equipment, and uncovered opportunities for meaningful innovation.

What stood out? Ease of use, ergonomics, and an approachable design were absolutely critical. Just as important was maneuverability—a top priority for workers navigating tight, crowded environments. Our innovative stand-on, ride-on “chariot-style” design gave users the ability to clean efficiently in spaces traditional scrubbers couldn’t reach.

With clear goals in place, the team moved into design—sketching, prototyping, and testing for function, comfort, and usability. The final product featured:

  • Rotomolded, injection-molded, and vacuum-formed plastic parts
  • Formed sheet metal, machined components, and electronics
  • A user-friendly graphic interface that simplified operation

The aesthetic was crafted to reflect Windsor’s brand identityprofessional, durable, approachable, and just the right amount of fun. The result: a cost-effective, innovative product that reshaped the industry, won awards, and raised the bar for user-centered design in commercial equipment.
